An Act Relative to Congo Conflict Minerals (H.2898)
Summary
A major cause of the war in the DRC is the pursuit of the eastern region’s considerable mineral wealth. Militias are fighting over these minerals. The particularly lucrative minerals are those that we use every day in our laptop computers and cell phones.
H.2898, sponsored by Representative Martin J. Walsh, would prohibit the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from contracting with companies that do not comply with federal regulations for the certification of minerals originating in the Congo. This legislation would allow the Commonwealth an opportunity to address the horrific conflict and to make a significant difference in the lives of the Congolese people. By encouraging the use of conflict-free minerals, Massachusetts would be in the forefront of efforts to end the war and sexual violence that are devastating the DRC.
